Making the choice to become a homeschool mom was actually easy for me. I started 3 out of the 4 of my kids' homeschooling journey later in their life (high school), during a time when many parents didn't have a choice, due to the pandemic. But even though the timing was different, I imagine our reasons were similar.
Always Wanted To, But Never Felt Ready
I had always wanted to homeschool my kids, but I never felt confident, supported, or knowledgeable enough. Then
Single Mom, Full-Time Educator
As a young mother of four and a single parent, I carried the weight not only of raising my daughters but also educating them, often by myself. All of my Daughters' father were mentally and emotionally unavailable. It was lonely.
It felt like no one cared about my daughters’ education but me, and I couldn’t wait on anyone else to step in. I knew from my own academic background how important it was for children to complete their general education in school- and to keep learning.
The Pandemic Pushed Me Forward
Fast forward to 2009, when news started spreading about an unknown new illness—what would later be identified as COVID-19. There was talk about virtual learning and returning to school with vaccine requirements. I remember thinking: “They’re definitely going to make immunizations a requirement soon.”
My girls were older by then, and it felt like the perfect time to let my twins finish their last 2 years of high school online. That was my moment, and I took it.
I revisted my research, spoke with homeschool parent/consultant, and signed them up.
It Felt Right—And It Was
All went well, so easy! The whole process was easier than I thought, especially since I didn’t have to shadow them constantly. But even that short time—two years—felt powerful and right. I had always felt that traditional schooling wasn’t enough. It didn’t prepare kids for real life. Most of what we’re taught is forgotten or unused—except for basic math and general knowledge here and there.
Homeschooling coupled with my knowledge of life skills lessons- felt right.
Our Kids Need Life Skills
That's why I recommend incorporating life skills into your homeschool routine. Teach them budgeting, cooking, how to advocate That's why I recommend incorporating my skills into your home.School's team teach them budgeting cooking. How to advocate For themselves how to stay mentally well these things matter more than some of those worksheets
What we really need to teach our children are life skills. Real-life tools to help them truly thrive.
I had to advocate for my daughters to get the support they needed. They had IEPs, and I had to fight for that. I’ll never forget those meetings or the time I had to take off work just to sit down with school officials and push for what my children deserved. That’s when I really saw how the system wasn’t built for us. It was never designed to help our kids truly succeed in life.
Education Must Go Beyond the Classroom
Look at today—many adults don’t even understand basic economics, like what a tariff is or how policy changes affect daily life. That’s a direct result of what schools fail to teach us. Imagine if we had learned that growing up.-Imagine if our kids did.
To the Homeschooling Parent: You’ve Got This
To every homeschooling parent out there: you’ve made the right choice. I didn’t start early, but I want to encourage you to keep going. Make the sacrifices you need to because your child’s future is worth it. Let the doubters talk; your success will speak louder. You’ll not only prove them wrong—you’ll inspire others who are thinking about homeschooling too.
Build in joy. Build in community. Celebrate the wins, even the small ones. Your kids will remember how it felt to be seen, heard and taught with love.
Be Prepared for a Virtual Future
Honestly, I think everyone needs to prepare for some form of virtual learning—even if they don’t homeschool full-time. So why not do it your way?
We’re Stronger Together
You are blessed to have a community of homeschoolers now. Let’s support one another.
Let’s take care of each other’s kids, continue becoming the best versions of ourselves, and grow into the parents our children truly need us to be.
