For families exploring homeschooling, the journey often begins with one big question: How do we make learning meaningful, engaging, and connected to real life? For Dr. Dawn Menge, the answer has been clear—learning thrives when children can see themselves in the story and step into the world beyond the page.
Based in Wrightwood, California, Dr. Dawn Menge is an award-winning author, educator, and curriculum specialist whose work bridges literacy, culture, and lived experience. Though new to homeschooling personally, her decades of experience in education—especially in special education—have shaped a powerful philosophy: learning should expand outward into the world, not stay confined to a desk.
📚 When Homeschooling Support Matters Most
Dr. Menge emphasizes that strong curriculum and reading materials are essential for homeschooling families. One standout resource is Queen Vernita’s Educational Series, an adventure-based collection that introduces children to geography, culture, social skills, flora, fauna, and real people in real places.
From road-tripping along the California coastline in Queen Vernita Visits the Oceaneers Coastline to stargazing with a real astronomer in Queen Vernita Meets Sir Heathybean the Astronomer, each story invites families to turn reading into a real-life experience—whether that’s a field trip, a nature walk, or a night under the stars.
With 19 published adventures worldwide and 10 more in production, the opportunities for exploration are truly endless.
✨ Keeping Learning Engaging
What keeps children engaged, according to Dr. Menge, is connection. Every character in Queen Vernita’s adventures is inspired by a real person, and Queen Vernita herself is named after the matriarch of Dr. Menge’s family—her grandmother. This personal touch helps children connect emotionally, culturally, and socially to what they’re learning.
🌱 Growth Through Homeschooling
Homeschooling, Dr. Menge shares, stretches families by turning everyday life into the classroom. Learning doesn’t stop—it simply moves into the world. Grocery stores become math lessons, coastlines become geography labs, and communities become living history books.
🤝 Culture, Community, and Representation
Community is the cornerstone of learning in Dr. Menge’s approach. The Queen Vernita series intentionally represents local and international cultures and includes children with disabilities—portrayed authentically and joyfully. This representation helps children see themselves as capable, valued learners who belong.
🏆 Measuring Success
Success looks like confidence. Children meeting reading goals. Children exploring the world on their own terms. Children with disabilities seeing themselves reflected in stories—not as limitations, but as whole, vibrant individuals forming friendships and enjoying life.
🧠 Teaching Responsibility and Leadership
Through each adventure, children learn social skills, empathy, and responsibility—not only to themselves, but to others and to the natural world. Every page opens conversations about leadership, kindness, and shared responsibility.
📖 A Go-To Learning Resource
For emerging readers and children with learning challenges, the repetitious, structured nature of Queen Vernita’s books builds confidence. Fluent readers, meanwhile, benefit from higher-level content and layered learning. Each page introduces a new friend, subject, or fact—offering up to 12 lesson opportunities per book.
💜 What Keeps Dr. Menge Motivated
Knowing that children across the globe are gaining knowledge, confidence, and literacy skills through Queen Vernita’s stories fuels Dr. Menge’s passion. Her mission is simple and powerful: connect learning to life, everywhere.
